COCKTAIL CODEX
“There are only six cocktails.”
That is the hypothesis behind this 2nd book by the authors of Death & Co: Modern Classic Cocktails—Alex Day, Nick Fauchald, & David Kaplan. Cocktail Codex was inspired by, and built around, this simple premise. The book simplifies the complex cocktail universe, declaring that there are truly only six fundamental recipes at the root of them all: the Old-Fashioned, Martini, Daiquiri, Sidecar, Whisky Highball, and the Flip. This distillation gives drink-makers of every level the tools to understand, execute, and improvise both classic and original cocktails.
The groundbreaking ideas, techniques, and recipes within Cocktail Codex helped it to win Book of the Year at the 2019 James Beard Foundation Awards.
Project
After the success of Death & Co: Modern Classic Cocktails—which PM Creative designed and illustrated cover to cover—the authors asked us to provide both a cover design and interior illustrations for their newest book, Cocktail Codex. The interior design was already being handled in-house by the publisher, Ten Speed Press. Inspired by the idea of “only six cocktails” we used the hexagon shape to create a cover icon. We also designed the Chapter Opener icons representing each of the six cocktails, as well as one stand-alone and one portrait illustration for each chapter.
